Grand Mayne is one of my favorite Bordeaux estates for both high quality and good value. The 2001 does not possess the power and depth of either the 2000 or 1998, but it is impeccably well-made. Husky, but sexy, this nicely textured, dark ruby/purple-colored effort reveals hints of espresso roast intermixed with creamy vanillin, blackberries, and currants. While foursquare/monolithic, it exhibits good sweetness and purity, medium body, and ripe tannin. Give it another 1-2 years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 12-15 years. Wine Advocate.June, 2004

You have to like the layers of ripe fruit and sweet Indian spice aromas. It's medium-bodied, with good tannins and a fresh finish. Not a huge wine, but very enjoyable, if not as exciting as the barrel sample. Best after 2007. 5,000 cases made.-James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2004
