Very generous wood presently dominates the earthy red berry fruit aromas. The round and vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess a lilting mouth feel and fine length on the seductive finish where the wood is once again quite prominent. It’s less clear here that the wood will eventually integrate. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com

We discovered Jean-Michel Guillon in early 2013 and it was an excellent find: these are some of the most accomplished wines we know, and for those that like a punchier style of Gevrey , they are peerless in their style.

Jean-Michel Guillon is a rarity in Bourgogne in that he started his domain from scratch just under 25 years ago. One could suggest that this makes his success all the more impressive, though the opposite view could also be true: not tied to any family traditions or winemaking theories, he was free from the start to aim for the thing that he talks about most: quality.

The style here is undeniably modern: the wines are big, rich, clean and glossy. Yet they retain a remarkable sense of place. These are wines that remain undoubtedly Pinot Noir, and unmistakeably Burgundian. As Allen Meadows writes: I would describe his wines as being amongst the best of the new world school of Burgundy, which is to say modern Burgundies that retain a clear sense of style and grace.

Jean-Michel’s 2013s, showed to us by his son (one of three) Alexis, are quite outstanding. Rich and succulent, one can taste the attention to detail that is put in here in both vineyard and winery. And, moreover, their terroir expression sings through.
