With 99 points, the 2011 Galatrona from Tenuta di Petrolo is a phenomenal wine.
Tenuta di Petrolo borders Chianti on the slopes overlooking the Valdarno valley. On the rise since 1997, their efforts in the vineyard and winery clearly pay off: Antonio Galloni says “Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team make some of the most sensual, pleasurable wines in Tuscany. Always intellectually curious, Sanjust continues to push the envelope”.
The 26ha of vineyards are perfectly located at altitudes between 250 and 450 meters which provides the ideal mix of warm, sunny days and cool evenings to perfectly mature the grapes. In their pursuit for quality, yields are kept exceptionally low in the vineyard, and selection is rigorous which results in less than 1,250 cases being produced for each vintage. The 2011 vintage has been lauded by James Suckling as the "best ever from here" and is listed in his "Top 12 Most Collectable Wines from Tuscany".

This is a phenomenal pure merlot with blueberries, raspberries and hints of milk chocolate. Some nutmeg too. Full body with very fine yet chewy tannins and a long, intense finish. Reminds me of the amazing 1998. Best ever from here. Needs four or five years of bottle age to soften.
Petrolo is a Tuscan wine producer based in the hills of the Chianti Collo Aretini region. The family owned and operated estate produce top notch wines made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all labelled under the IGT wine designation. The estate was purchased by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940’s and is now run by Lucia Bazzocchi, and her son Luca. Together, they produce their range of critically acclaimed wines including Torrione, a Sangiovese often included in Wine Spectator’s top 100 wines of the year. Their Merlot, Galatrona, has been compared to the top names in Bordeaux, notably Petrus. Other wines in their collection include: Campolusso, Boggina, Sanpetrolo, Bogginafora and Inarno. Petrolo’s vineyards extend across 31 hectares bordering the south eastern area of Chianti Classico; however, only 26 hectares are included in their current production. The main objective of the winery is to grow the best possible grapes and use little intervention in their winemaking to create outstanding wines. Though they are not certified organic, they have not been using any inorganic fertilizers, pesticides or chemicals for almost 10 years. At harvest, the grapes are all hand-picked before being vinified in glazed cement vats. Each vineyard batch is fermented separately, using only native yeast. Gentle winemaking techniques are used for all grape varieties before ageing takes places in a combination of French oak barriques, tonneaux and 40 hl barrels.
