2012 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard Kapcsandy Family Winery

From a benchmark Napa Valley producer and compared by Parker to a Bordeaux first growth, the Kapcsandy Estate Cuvée, State Lane Vineyard is one of the most eye-catching releases of the brilliant 2012 vintage.

There is astounding quality here, causing Parker to comment that “If Napa Valley made wines to emulate Château Margaux, this might be a candidate”. Happily it’s both a fraction of the price of the Bordeaux icon and will be drinking well on arrival - for fans of Bordeaux and Napa alike, it’s superb.

Thanks to its consistent brilliance, Kapcsandy has a loyal, bordering on fanatical, following. Small production and distribution primarily through their private mailing list keeps it scarce, so with good quantities available for this excellent new release, it is a rare opportunity to stock up the cellar.

“The bottled 2012s are all performing brilliantly. It was a large, but not excessive crop with a consistently warm growing season that never suffered the heat spikes Napa often experiences. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée State Lane Vineyard (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) was aged 20 months in mostly French oak and 10% new Hungarian oak. A beautiful blue/purple color is followed by notes of blackcurrants, white chocolate, licorice and spring flowers. There is an attractive sweetness to the fruit that comes from ideal ripeness, not residual sugar. Spicy with round tannins and a lush, medium to full-bodied personality, it should drink well for 15-20 years. If Napa Valley made wines to emulate Château Margaux, this might be a candidate. There are 1,190 cases.” Oct 2014 www.erobertparker.com Drink 2014-2034

The 2012 Estate Cuvée is fabulous. Graphite, smoke, cedar, tobacco and licorice blossom in a voluptuous wine endowed with superb depth and pure vintage 2012 radiance. Dark spices, rose petal and mint are some of the many notes that are laced into the super-expressive, resonant finish. This is a fabulous example of the year. Dec 2014 www.vinous.com Drink 2019-2037

A family-owned winery based in Yountville at the southern end of Napa Valley, Kapcsandy is a name synonymous with quality and rarity, producing some of the best yet most difficult to source wines in California. Described by Robert Parker as “Nothing short of remarkable”, Kapcsandy produces between 2,500 and 4,000 cases of wine each year from their 15.5 acres of world class vineyards.

Originally the old Beringer State Line Vineyard, the Kapcsandy estate was purchased by the family in 2000 after phylloxera destroyed much of the original vineyard and it had to be stripped out and replanted. Today, it is renowned as one of the finest wine growing regions in Napa, planted with very tight spacing and a north/south exposure for an ideal growing season.

Chiefly concerned with Bordeaux varietals, Kapcsandy’s Estate Cuvee is composed of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (blended with minimal Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.) The Roberta’s Reserve, meanwhile, is a Pomerol-style blend containing approximately 90% Merlot, whilst the Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard is a Medoc-style offering usually containing 85% or more Cabernet Sauvignon. Some deviation from the Bordeaux line can nonetheless be found across the range, including an aged white labelled Furmint, after the Hungarian grape that hails from the same country at the Kapcsandy family.

A Napa superstar, much of the minimal output is sold direct to those lucky enough to be on the mailing list and this leaves precious little available for the global market. Drawing praise from critics across the board, they are nonetheless wines to seek out wherever possible.

“World class wines… They seem to combine the best of French savoir faire with the extraordinary ripe, pure fruit grown in well-tended Napa Valley vineyards” – Parker

“In all of my travels throughout the world I have met few producers who can match Lou Kapcsandy’s passion and total dedication to excellence” – Galloni

“Perfectionist Lou Kapcsandy and his talented winemaker Denis Malbec may be making the most extraordinary wines in California today” - Tanzer
