Average critic rating : 87.0 points

This wine possesses an austerity and aggressiveness to its tannin, but it is a very good to excellent Ducru-Beaucaillou with an earthy, peppery nose of black fruits, earth, and minerals. The wine's attack and mid-palate are ripe, with smoky, black currant fruit. I doubt the 1983 will ever fully shed its tannic astringency, but it is a savory, medium to full-bodied wine that has reached full maturity. Anticipated maturity: Now-2006. Last tasted 3/97. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition # B1.

Big and intense aromas of tar and black licorice. a full body with firm tannins that lacks a bit of charm at the moment. Needs time? Better after 1996.--The Bordeaux 50. -James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1994
