1976 Dom Perignon

The rare 1976 Dom Perignon has been described by Antonio Galloni as "a revelation", "a totally seductive wine" and "one of my all-time favourite vintages." He has tasted and scored it consistently on a number of occasions, making it an eye-catching opportunity for any Champagne collector or connoisseur.

Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine rates 1976 as a five star vintage, with author Tom Stevenson picking this out as one of top eight wines of the year, saying: “There is an opulence of fruit about the 1976s that makes them very special indeed.”

Tastings and the big critic scores listed below confirm the quality for those lucky enough to own this top-drawer Champagne.

The 1976 Dom Pérignon, from original wood case, was even better. In fact, it was staggering. Delicate and floral, the wine revealed incredibly precision and detail in a perfumed, sublime style. Sweet candied Pinot notes wafted on the ethereal, sensual finish. What a wine! Jun 2009, www.vinous.com

A wine that has impressed me very little in the past, with its vintage-typical, slightly burned, warm character. That's why it was it was such a great surprise that I liked the '76 best of all among sixteen vintages at a gargantuan dinner featuring wines from Moët in December 2000. This bottle had a sensual floweriness that distinguishes the foremost '76s, as well as a stately, long, sweet finish. Grandiose! It should perhaps be pointed out that the wine was served blind. Winner of the comprehensive DP tasting in Copenhagen 2006. Mar 2014, www.champagneclub.com
