Checking in as a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that’s all from the limestone soils around the village of Latour de France, the 2015 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Visitare Interiore Terrae ( V I T ) has a more southern Rhone feel in its aromas and flavors, especially when tasted beside the RI release. Raspberries, violets, licorice and spice-box all emerge from this full-bodied, sexy, yet elegant ,and always pure and precise barrel sample. I’ll mostly likely taste this again from barrel next year, but it has fabulous raw material.

I continue to be blown away by the quality coming from Domaine de la Bila Haut, which is run with the Chapoutier team. They’ve continued to grow these Roussillon releases, and even at the entry-level price point, the quality is stunning. The straight Les Vignes de Bila Haut, at $14, is a no-brainer purchase, and it’s made in enough quantity that readers should have no problem finding a bottle or more. The quality of the l’Esquerda continues to improve and I think the 2015 will be the best vintage of this cuvee to date. The top single parcel bottles of RI and VIT are made in tiny quantities, but these are up with the finest wines coming from the south of France. In short, these are fabulous wines that show classic characters (most are aged all in concrete) and represent incredible values. Don’t miss them. Apr 2016, www.robertparker.com
A month-old, preserved cask sample - although unlike its stablemate samples, this wine does seem to be very slightly tired on the nose. Not as heavy a sulphur dose as the others? Mid crimson. Broad, round, very warm but chock full of terroir. Every bit as exciting as the 2015 northern Rhônes from this producer, if not more so! Really rich and lively. Firm with a strong rock-sucking element on the end. Bravo! I should imagine a really fresh sample would be even more impressive. May 2016, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2020-2030
Blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah from 70 year old vines. Dark, brooding nose shows cassis, dark cherries, smoke and gravel. Dense fruit on the palate with layers of black and red fruits, sweet spice, graphite and flecks of spice. Big, glossy texture is balanced with fresh acidity. Lovely. Apr 2016, F+R
