2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis Etienne Guigal

Scored a near perfect 99 points the Cote Rotie 'Chateau d’Ampuis' 2010 from Guigal remains a stand-out buy for any collector of the best of the Rhone Valley.

This 2010 was originally scored at 94-96+ from barrel and has clearly benefited hugely from a few years in bottle. Now scored a near flawless 99 points in it’s last two subsequent tastings, it is “an incredible effort” for this prestigious cuvee and considering the quality of the winemaking and the vintage, looks all but essential.

Not only is it a great wine in its own right, Dunnuck, in both these most recent notes compares it in quality to Guigal’s world-famous ‘La La’ single-vineyard Cote Roties; three of the most iconic wines on the market. All three of the La La’s scored a perfect 100 points, so for this to be able to have “no problem standing beside” them underscored the immense quality on show, and for a fraction of the price.

The Chateau d'Ampuis 2010 is a great wine now and will be magnificent for years to come.

More closed than when I tasted it earlier this year, the 2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is an incredible effort that’s made from 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Coming from the estate’s top sites and aged 38 months in new oak, it has no problem standing beside the top three single-vineyard releases. Crème de cassis, vanilla bean, smoked meats and licorice all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, structured Cote Rotie that needs another 5-6 years of bottle age, but will keep for 2-3 decades.||The father/son team of Marcel and Philippe Guigal continue to keep their estate at the top of the hierarchy in the Rhône Valley. All the way from their inexpensive Côtes du Rhône to their top-end Côte Rôties and Hermtiage, the attention to detail and focus on quality is unmatched. Readers should also check out the recent Rhone Retrospective article I wrote that covered the Saint Joseph Vignes des Hospices, Côte Rôtie Brune et Blonde, Côte Rôtie Chateau d'Ampuis and Côte Rôtie La Mouline cuvees going back for over a decade. I said it there, and I'll say it again here, this estate is producing some of the most incredible and singular wines in the world. eRobertParker.com.December, 2014

Etienne Guigal, one of the most famous producers in the world, is regarded by Robert Parker as “the axis upon which the northern Rhône rests, a producer whose wines transcend all levels of the hierarchy. He is passionate about making single vineyard expressions using a non-interventionalist, distinctive approach. Best known for his ‘La Las’ (La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque), these “other-wordly” wines are often spoken about in the same breath as the greatest Grand Crus of Bordeaux and Burgundy. However, due to Parker’s main focus being on the 'La Las' some other sensational wines from this magnificent producer slip under the radar. In particular, Guigal’s Lieu-Dit St Joseph offers terrific value. This tiny single vineyard, planted with old vines which range from 20 to 75 years of age, produces a very special wine.
