2013 Cloudburst Cabernet Sauvignon Cloudburst

Cloudburst makes perhaps the single most collectable wine currently being made in Australia. The tiny total produced are mainly found on the lists of high-end restaurants (French Laundry in Napa, Tribeca Grill in New York, Rockpool in Sydney, the list goes on…) or at the cellar door, meaning that very little is ever available for consumers to buy.

Founded as recently as 2006, this is a young winery already garnering serious praise:

Wine Spectator in March 2016: “The results, since his [Will Berliner, winemaker at Cloudburst] first vintage, have been spectacular, showing richness, complexity, ripeness and depth without high alcohol. The tiny production, totaling only a few hundred cases, gets top dollar and has collectors clamoring. It could end up being the most-coveted Cabernet there.”

Wine Advocate in November 2016: “Cloudburst's new little piece of heaven, a closely planted, dry-grown, biodynamically farmed vineyard just off the Cave's Road, continues to yield stunning results.”

The wines come with a phenomenal reputation and indeed a price-tag to match. The vines are ungrafted and the Margaret River climate produces extraordinary depth and complexity. These are world-class wines from a tiny boutique operation, extraordinarily collectable and available for the very first time in the UK.

Pale crimson-purple; a striking black bottle with a single word on the screen-printed gold label: 'Cloudburst'. This is a very well made Margaret River cabernet, with purity and focus its watchwords; cassis and bay leaf fruit sits in a frame of firm, but not dry, tannins; has impressive length. Deep garnet-purple, the 2013 Cloudburst Cabernet Sauvignon reveals notes of red and black currants, dark chocolate, dried herbs, cedar and yeast extract. Medium-bodied, elegant and with tense, muscular fruit at this primary stage, it has an approachable, finely grained tannic backbone and great persistence. Very youthful, deep red/purple colour, bright and young, the bouquet highly aromatic with stalky crushed-leaf and violet aromas, including a hint of greenness. The palate is delicate and refined, subtle and elegant, with fruit purity and lively acidity. The profile is lean and the tannins are soft, fine and ripe. 13.2% alcohol, 5% Malbec. Vivid, fresh, direct blackcurrant fruit nose. Powerful, bold palate with vivid black fruits and a nice hint of green. Well integrated, primary and focused with lovely balance. Jun 2015, www.wineanorak.com
