In contrast to the last few wines where the wood was at low volume, here it all but dominates the distinctly sauvage, even animale nose of pungent earth, underbrush and humus that add breadth to the somber dark currant and plum aromas. There is good richness and power to the moderately concentrated and solidly complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a surprisingly supple mouth feel; indeed this could aptly be described as supple and while it does tighten up somewhat, this will be an unusually early drinker in the context of what is typical for this wine. (Bouchard vinifies its plots from the top and bottom of theclos together; 60% vendange entier): Healthy red-ruby. Dark cherry, menthol, licorice and wild herbs on the demonstrative nose. Sweet and fairly plump but backward, showing a slight medicinal reserve and an herbal element to its black cherry and licorice flavors. This saline, fat wine is deceptively approachable today, finishing with ripe tannins, but its slow-building length and medicinal and menthol qualities suggest that it will need time in bottle--probably longer than the Echézeaux. Incidentally, Bouchard will pull up and replant its lower parcel of Clos Vougeot this year. Jan 2016,

The Clos de Vougeot 2014 is a both focused and generous offer. The nose show ample red and dark berry fruit spiced with a earthy minerality, chocolate, violets and other spices. On the palate quite rich and generous mid-palate fruit – fresh and juicy with a good energy for the appellation. A refined and precise Clos de Vougeot in the making .. quite impressive. Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s most important houses, and the largest vineyard holder in the Côte d’Or with 130 hectares of vineyards. It’s holdings include 12 hectares of grand cru vineyards, with significant plots in Corton and Corton-Charlemagne, Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. It holds more than 70 hectares of premier cru vineyards, most of which are in the Côte de Beaune, including one of Beaune’s most famous wines: Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus.

The company is owned by the Henriot group, which took over in 1995. Run from their impressive headquarters in Beaune, Bouchard has been making better and better wines in the past twenty years, and can be considered a benchmark producer of both red and white Burgundy.

Bouchard’s holdings in Chevalier-Montrachet are their jewel, and they hold Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte in its entirety. This vineyard sits just above Bouchard’s holding of Le Montrachet, and is one of the finest examples of Chardonnay. The house also has grand cru holdings in Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Bonne Mares in the Côte de Nuits.
