Awarding it 96 points – his second highest score ever for this wine and placing it as one of the finest Chilean wines of the vintage – James Suckling calls Lapostolle’s Clos Apalta 2013: “One of the most elegant Clos Apaltas.”
Suckling also describes Lapostolles's Carmenère-based flagship red as being: “always one of the benchmarks of the vintage in Chile” and puts it in his Top 10 Chilean wines alongside the significantly more expensive Seña and Chadwick. On discussing the grape variety he says: “Carmenère leaves its special mark in Chile… The best I have tasted is Lapostolle Clos Apalta.”
Owned by the Marnier-Lapostolle family, makers of Grand-Marnier, Lapostolle has fast become one of Chile’s elite producers, combining French elegance with Chilean terroir. Clos Apalta comes from old vines – some approaching 100 years old – planted in a horseshoe-shaped valley that is farmed organically and biodynamically. The grapes are fermented with native yeasts before being aged in French oak for 28 months in probably one of the world’s most glamorous wineries.
Hailing from 2013, the best Chilean vintage ever rated by Wine Advocate to date and one in which Jancis Robinson said: “Cool weather that was better for later ripening varieties - so Carmenère is especially promising”. This latest release of Clos Apalta therefore represents an exciting opportunity…
