2015 Clarisse Vieilles Vignes

James Suckling called Château Clarisse Vieilles Vignes 2015 an "old vine wine that is truly a dream", a sentiment echoed by Jeff Leve who described it as a "daydream", while Wine Spectator were confident that "everything is there" in this, the Le Calvez's sixth vintage. Only around 10,000 bottles made from 65 year old vines.

Château Clarisse, along with its people and its wines, represents one of the most interesting and under the radar discoveries of the Bordeaux 2015 En Primeur campaign for us at FINE+RARE.

Beneath the vineyards at Château Clarisse resides the famous St Emilion limestone belt. Placed high on the plateau, overlooking a stunning amphitheater, this is easily one the most beautiful and bucolic spots on the Right Bank. It also happens to makes one of the best value Bordeaux wines we've come across in recent years - and, given the quality, we can't see their prices going anywhere but North.

Owners Olivia and Didier Le Calvez made names for themselves as hoteliers and the estate is named after their daughter. Olivia is Secretary General of the Relais & Châteaux in France and created the boutique Hotel de Toiras on the Île de Ré, while Didier is the CEO at La Reserve group and has previously headed up Four Seasons George V and Le Bristol in Paris, the Plaza and the Pierre in New York, the Regent in Singapore and more in London, Courchevel, St Barts and Marrakech. The pair apply the same care and attention to their vines as they do to their guests.

The Le Calvez family make wines under the watchful eye of Bordeaux legend Stéphane Derenoncourt, the owner of Domaine l'A, who has worked at Pavie-Macquin, Canon-la-Gaffelière and La Mondotte and consults for Smith Haut Lafitte, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarrosse, Clos Fourtet and Domaine de Chevalier to name just a few. Derenoncourt worked long and hard with the pair to find the perfect site, which includes 65 year old vines, a real rarity in Bordeaux. Their wines are modern in style, impeccably balanced and full of flavour.

The 2015 Clarisse Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is darker, richer and deeper than the straight bottling, but it is not meaningfully better nor more complex. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice and new leather are all pushed forward, but a measure of aromatic intensity has been conceded in the search for textural richness. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Romain Bocchio are the consulting winemakers. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

They 2015 Clarisse Vieilles Vignes is the sixth vintage from the 3.5-hectare part of the vineyard and is pure Merlot aged in 50% new oak. It has a ripe and powerful bouquet, a touch of warmth coming through, but not too over-powering. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, powerful and forceful, though kept in check by the acidity; it is a little muscular towards the lightly spiced finish with a long, baking-powder tinged finish. Impressive, although I find as much to enjoy in the regular bottling. Apr 2016, www.eRobertParker.com, Drink: 2020-2036

This shows real depth and power with so much vine bark, mushroom and currant aromas and flavors. Full and chewy. Excellent. Old vine wine that is truly a dream. Best ever. Mar 2016, www.JamesSuckling.com

Offers solid weight, with a loamy hint underscoring the dark plum and red currant fruit, while a strong tobacco edge checks in on the finish. This has a little more integration to go, but everything is there. Mar 2016, James Molesworth, www.WineSpectator.com

A Stéphane Derenoncourt wine. Soft and round. I think I prefer the regular bottling. This is too exaggerated. Apr 2016, www.Jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2024-2030

From 100% old vine Merlot , with vines that average 65 years of age, comes a daydream of blackberry liqueur, minerality, molten chocolate and pure, black cherries. Fat, lush, juicy and rich, round and supple, this wine is a Jeffrey Davies Selection Exclusive. Apr 2016, www.thewinecellarinsider.com

It’s worth trading up to the old vine cuvée from this plateau-located château, made entirely from Merlot. It’s a bold, oaky style that needs time in bottle, but the tannins are stylish, the wine focused and bright. Apr 2016, www.timatkin.com, Drink: 2022-2030
