2015 Clarisse

Château Clarisse is one of the most interesting discoveries from the Bordeaux 2015 En Primeur campaign for us at FINE+RARE; an esoteric and under the radar offering.

High quality and relatively undiscovered, this winery is owned by a pair of hoteliers: Olivia and Didier Le Calvez.Olivia is Secretary General of the Relais & Châteaux in France and created the boutique Hotel de Toiras on the Île de Ré, while Didier is the CEO at La Reserve group and has previously headed up Four Seasons George V and Le Bristol in Paris, the Plaza and the Pierre in New York, the Regent in Singapore and more in London, Courchevel, St Barts and Marrakech. The pair applies the same care and attention to their vines as they do to their guests.

The Le Calvez family make wines under the watchful eye of Bordeaux legend Stéphane Derenoncourt, the owner of Domaine l'A, who has worked at Pavie-Macquin, Canon-la-Gaffelière and La Mondotte and consults for Smith Haut Lafitte, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarrosse, Clos Fourtet and Domaine de Chevalier to name just a few. Derenoncourt worked long and hard with the pair to find the perfect site, which includes 65 year old vines; a real rarity in Bordeaux.

Their two wines, Château Clarisse (around 40,000 bottles made) and Château Clarisse Vieilles Vignes (only around 10,000 bottles made), are modern in style, impeccably balanced and full of flavour.

Château Clarisse 2015 has been described as "silky sumptuous and wonderfully expressive" by Antonio Galloni, and Jancis Robinson said that this Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion is "better than many a St-Emilion", high praise in a vintage like 2015.

James Suckling called Château Clarisse Vieilles Vignes 2015  an "old vine wine that is truly a dream", a sentiment echoed by Jeff Leve who described it as a "daydream", while Wine Spectator were confident that "everything is there" in this, the Le Calvez's sixth vintage.

The critics have been divided over which wine they preferred. Jancis Robinson and Neal Martin have both stated a preference for Château Clarisse, while James Suckling and Jeff Leve have sided with Tim Atkin, who said "it's worth trading up to the old vine cuvée." But we can't choose between them, so we'll leave the final decision to you.

The 2015 Clarisse is silky, sumptuous and wonderfully expressive. Dark red cherry, raspberry, spice, menthol and rose petal are all pushed forward in this succulent, mid-weight wine. Sweet floral notes add lift on the expressive, inviting finish. Tasted two times. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Romain Bocchio are the consulting winemakers. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

The 2015 Clarisse is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, of which one-third is matured in new oak. There is plenty of sultry black cherry and mulberry fruit on the nose that gains intensity in the glass and neatly embraces the wood. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, a little spice and ginger on the entry, followed by grainy-textured red and black fruit with touches of Moroccan spice lining the finish. What a superb Fronsac. Apr 2016, www.eRobertParker.com, Drink: 2019-2032

Very intense with salt, pepper and stone. Plenty of ripe fruit. Full body, powerful. Fantastic. Apr 2016, www.jamessuckling.com

A Stéphane Derenoncourt wine. Round and rich and subtle. Very lively. Better than many a St-Émilion. Apr 2016, www.JancisRobinson.com, Drink: 2023-2032
