The 2013 Chorey-les-Beaune la Piéce de Chapitre was fortunately not affected by hail. It has a clean and fresh strawberry winegum and violet-scented bouquet that is nicely defined and pure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and impressive weight in the mouth. There is plenty of red and black fruit tinged with orange sorbet, the oak seeping through just a little towards the finish. Overall, this displays good substance and should age well.||Nathalie Tollot escorted me down to her cellars in Chorey-les-Beaune for a tasting through her wines that were touched by hail to various degrees. For example, her Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Crus were devastated and blended with her small production of Savigny Villages, while other vineyards within proximity to the damage went unscathed. It’s a postcode lottery with the prize, survival. There was a tendency for some of the cuvées to show a lot of new wood. The domaine does have a proclivity to new oak that I find sometimes masks terroir expression, and one or two felt a little oppressed by the cooperage. As you might expect, up on the Corton hills is where Tollot-Beaut’s best 2013s lie, especially their fine Le Corton, perhaps more so than the Corton-Bressandes this year. In terms of quality to price, you cannot go wrong with the Savigny-les-Beaune Village that was given extra heft by those deselected Premier Crus. eRobertParker.com.January, 2015
