Discreet notes of wood and petrol add breadth to the cool and pure aromas of citrus, acacia blossom, wet stone and green apple. There is excellent volume and cut to the tension-filled large-scaled flavors that brim with minerality before concluding in a palate staining, powerful and beautifully persistent finish. This is actually quite rich for a young Chevalier and while it should certainly reward up to a decade of cellaring I suspect that in much the same fashion as the Corton-Charlemagne that it should drink well after only a few years. The 2014 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has an enticing, subtle bouquet, timid at first but soon finding its voice and developing attractive citrus peel, yuzu and tinned apricot scents all struck through with tangible mineral tones. The palate is well balanced with impressive weight in the mouth. It never lets everything go, preferring to remain linear and maintain precision, gently fanning out towards the finish with a pinch of white pepper and vibrant citrus fruit. This is a very well-crafted Chevalier-Montrachet that is imbued with a sense of joie-de-vivre. (Jan 2016), www.erobertparker.com, Drink 2017-2032

Pale, bright yellow. Alluring high-pitched perfume of lime blossom, white peach, flowers and lavender sea salt. Penetrating, gripping wine with a superb spine of acidity and minerality to its savory flavors of white peach, lemon and crushed stone. Displays a wonderfully light touch and a fine-grained texture but also powerful stony mineral spine for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle. An outstanding vintage for this bottling, finishing with almost painful cut and uncommon lift. Sep 2016, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2022-2030

Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s most important houses, and the largest vineyard holder in the Côte d’Or with 130 hectares of vineyards. It’s holdings include 12 hectares of grand cru vineyards, with significant plots in Corton and Corton-Charlemagne, Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. It holds more than 70 hectares of premier cru vineyards, most of which are in the Côte de Beaune, including one of Beaune’s most famous wines: Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus.

The company is owned by the Henriot group, which took over in 1995. Run from their impressive headquarters in Beaune, Bouchard has been making better and better wines in the past twenty years, and can be considered a benchmark producer of both red and white Burgundy.

Bouchard’s holdings in Chevalier-Montrachet are their jewel, and they hold Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte in its entirety. This vineyard sits just above Bouchard’s holding of Le Montrachet, and is one of the finest examples of Chardonnay. The house also has grand cru holdings in Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Bonne Mares in the Côte de Nuits.
