Looking at the 2012s from barrel, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Classique is a rough blend of 85% Grenache and 5% each of Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. Aged all in concrete, it is a medium-bodied, rounded and nicely textured effort that has solid kirsch and cherry fruit, underbrush and light spice-driven aromas, fine tannin and a clean, elegant style. It should gain weight once bottled and have over a decade of longevity. Drink 2014-2022. ||Located in the southern portion of Chateauneuf du Pape, and comprised of 55 acres of mostly sandy soils, Domaine Saint Prefert burst onto the scene in 2003 and has since produced outstanding wine after outstanding wine. Run by Isabel Ferrando, the style here is up-front and perfumed, with silky, elegant textures that carry serious amounts of richness without ever seeming heavy. While both 2011 and 2012 are strong here, these showed slightly more straightforward, mid-weight profiles than previous vintages. In addition to these Saint-Prefert releases, she also produces a 100% Grenache cuvee under her own Isabel Ferrando label, Colombis. In addition to the Chateauneufs, don’t miss the Cotes du Rhones from this estate as they give insight into the style and quality here.||A Daniel Johnnes Selection, imported by Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel.
