Average rating 92.5

1995 was a very good, but firmly structured, tannic vintage for nearly all Chateauneuf du Pape producers. The wines do not display the generosity of the 1998s or 2000s, but the finest examples are admirably concentrated. Clos des Papes’ closed, spicy 1995 exhibits more animal-like notes than the sweeter, more fruit-dominated vintages of 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001. Nevertheless, it is big, full, and promising, but cellaring is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com # E2003 Jan 2003
From a hot year - with rain at harvest - that benefited later-picking estates, the 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape is still impressively young and vibrant, with a solid kick of tannin. Possessing a masculine edge to its licorice, smoked meats, peppery herbs and both red and black fruits, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and a little edgy on the palate, with plenty of similarities to the 2005. It certainly has another decade of longevity, but the tannin will be something to watch. I've had more ready to go bottles from my cellar and certainly see no reason to hold off here. eRobertParker.com.September, 2015
