Average critic rating : 93.5 points

Like many of the best wines from this vintage, the 1989 remains a big, muscular, virile, closed Chateauneuf boasting an impressive ruby/purple color displaying no signs of degradation. Still young and vibrant, with hints of saddle leather, roasted herbs, licorice, and black fruit, as well as excruciatingly high tannin, this vintage may behave like the 1978. The only concern is when will these wines reach maturity? Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com # E2003 Jan 2003

Showing the hot, burly nature of the vintage nicely, the 1989 Chateauneuf du Pape has ample ground herbs, tobacco leaf, olive tapenade and assorted mature Grenache fruit characteristics to go with a full-bodied, still tannic, firm, and muscular feel on the palate. It has plenty of similarities to the '95, and Paul-Vincent commented that both vintages were almost impossible to drink in their youth. I've recently had an over-the-hill bottle of the '90, but well-stored bottles of this meaty, classic and powerful '89 will have another decade of longevity. eRobertParker.com.September, 2015

Clos de Papes, in the Rhone, is one of the top estates in the region, and in France. Prices and quality of these wines are extremely high. As well as the Clos de Papes red wines, the domaine also produces the Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, 2007 being considered as their best vintage of recent years.
