The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru la Maltroie has more complexity and delineation than the les Champs-Gain at this stage, the terroir more expressive with subtle limestone scents filtering through. The palate is medium-bodied with attractive grapefruit, melon and white peach notes on the entry, a fine line of acidity and a sense of energy on the finish that was not quite presented by the Champs-Gain. ||Francois Jouard, one of Chassagne’s lesser know but worthwhile vignerons, told me that he had the same problems during the growing season as his colleagues, but fortunately he was able to use his tractor in the vineyards rather than toil away with an “atomizer." The harvest began on September 30 until around October 6 and he chaptalized the wine “a little." His 2013s had been bottled at the end of August 2014, just before the harvest. While I do not think these quite reached the quality of his 2012s, frankly they are not far behind and readers should seek him out. eRobertParker.com.December, 2014

In January 2012, we were introduced to Vincent Jouard in Chassagne Montrachet who works in small, ancient, low cellars across the street from the church in the heart of the village. Historically the majority of Domaine Jouard’s 11 hectare production was sold in barrel to negocients but Vincent is committed to bottling his own wines and to establishing the name of his domaine. His wines are quite frankly brilliant. They are tight and nervy, drenched in mineral and citrus oil and every one of them is notable for their purity and length. New oak is at a minimum. The other VERY notable thing is the price. Vincent’s 1er Crus are priced at barely above most domaines’ villages wines and his Batard is at something like half the price of most estates.
