The 2011 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets is initially understated on the nose, but given a little encouragement it offers an engaging cool, rocky nose that is almost Zen-like compared to the other premier crus. The palate is wonderfully balanced with a fine thread of acidity. There is a touch of dried honey and almond furnishing the entry that segues into a harmonious, almost Meursault-like finish that is very convincing, flecks of shaved ginger on the aftertaste. This can be broached early but will also repay with cellaring. Drink now-2028. ||It was a pleasure to return to Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard, where in recent years the charming Caroline l’Estimee has quietly gone about creating some of Chassagne’s best expressions of Village’s premier crus, while her solitary Grand Cru has a propensity to evolve into a Batard-Montrachet’s of great breeding with ten years on the clock. Visiting in early June on a blissfully sunny morning, she informed me that they had experienced a cool and incredibly rainy spring in 2013, and that as a consequence most of her vines were around three weeks behind the average vegetative cycle. Caroline also told me that she is seeking organic certification for her vineyards that should come in 2014 (though she has eschewed herbicides since 2000.) She explained how she now approaches each of her parcels in a different way, whereas she once adopted a more uniform approach, and that is reflected in her wines that always demonstrate finesse and the elusive trait of personality. eRobertParker.com.August, 2013
