2010 Charmes Chambertin Frederic Magnien

Armed with impressive scores across the board, the product of a great vintage for red Burgundy and very sensibly priced, the 2010 Frederic Magnien, Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru gets just about everything right. Any well-stocked Burgundy cellar should be packed with 2010s. It was a benchmark year and the reds are beautifully balanced with a deeply classic style that means they will be showing wonderfully well for decades to come.

The wines of Charmes are typically silky and rich in style and Magnien seem to have hit all the right notes in 2010. To Galloni it’s “sexy and compelling”, to Tanzer “wonderfully expressive” and to Meadows “perfectly ripe.” Rare universal praise that makes this effort particularly worth the effort to seek out. Thanks to their popularity, grand crus from this excellent year, of this quality and at this price point are becoming increasingly short in supply.

"This is perfectly ripe with a pure nose of essence of wild red berry fruit that is liberally laced with earth, spice and underbrush nuances. There is excellent volume to the solidly structured middle weight flavors that possess good maturity of the structural elements that shape the relatively powerful and persistent finish where a touch of wood can be discerned." "The 2010 Charmes-Chambertin is deep, plush and totally inviting. Sweet floral notes meld into layers of expressive red fruit in this sexy, compelling Burgundy. Clean, mineral notes frame the highly attractive finish. This is a striking wine from Frederic Magnien.Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030." www.erobertparker.com Feb 2012

"Good bright medium red. Wild aromas of black raspberry and gibier, lifted by a rose petal topnote. Large-scaled, fat and supple, with a smoky, earthy complexity to the sweet raspberry and strawberry flavors. Finishes with very suave tannins and captivating lingering sweetness. This is wonderfully expressive already." Mar 2013 www.vinousmedia.com
