1995 Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires

Charles Heidsieck are a Champagne house worth knowing and a consistent favourite here at FINE+RARE. We are therefore delighted to offer their superb prestige cuvee, the 95 point 1995 Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires.

The Blanc de Millenaires a has been met with unanimous praise by the critics, who have called it “exquisite”, “mouthwatering” and, in the words of Richard Juhlin, “already a legend”.

Made of 100% Chardonnay, the Blanc des Millenaires is a precise selection of the very best grapes from the Côte de Blancs, hailing from four Grands Crus and Premier Cru. It has more than 15 years maturation in the heart of Heidsieck’s historic cellars. It has won a number of awards, including Gold at the International Wine & Spirit Competion - an impressive litany of achievements that puts this Champagne firmly at the top of any wish list.

Charles Heidsieck have one simple, overriding ambition; to create the very best Champagne on the market. With numerous awards and wins against much more expensive rivals they appear to have achieved this aim, to the extent that renowned Champagne critic Tom Stevenson has awarded them “almost mythical status” >/i>and commented: “After more than 30 years' intensive experience... I have ripped up my old list of Champagne’s greatest producers and started afresh with Charles Heidsieck firmly at the top.”

As the pinnacle of their range, this incredible prestige cuvee is therefore not to be missed.

The 1995 Brut Blanc des Millenaires shows just how compelling this often overlooked vintage can be. Layers of lemon, pastry spices, crushed rocks and savory herbs literally jump from the glass in this exquisite, perfumed, beautifully delineated Champagne. The 1995 shows lovely flavor complexity and nuance from its extended time in bottle, yet it also retains plenty of freshness, verve and acidity. This is a great showing from Charles Heidsieck. The 1995 was made before the tenure of the house's current team, headed by CEO Cécile Bonnefond. It will be very interesting to see what develops at this historic property over the coming years. Heidsieck’s cuvée de prestige is a constant winner at blind tastings all over the world. Already a legend! So silky-smooth and with such intensive nut toffee! The toastiness is there, but lying swimming in an oily nectar which prevents it from really making its way forward as it does in many other vintages. Pretty mousse and uplifting charm. These Oenothèque wines are truly delightful. What vigour and freshness along with the depth and the tones of maturity that are gradually revealed. Exquisitely delicious! This mouthwatering Champagne is refined and satiny in texture, with a citrusy overtone to the flavors of apricot preserves, toasted hazelnut and brioche, crystallized honey and fleur de sel. Presents a lasting, smoke- and spice-filled finish. Nov 2015, www.winespectator.com, Drink: 2015-2025

Pale gold. Masses of evolution on the nose. Toasty, nutty notes with more than a hint of walnuts and a very dry finish. No aggressive froth; a very serious wine worth lingering over. Meaty and substantial. Very savoury and appetising. Tastes pretty dry. Admirable persistence. Apr 2016, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2012-2022

Deep, pure and fresh on the fruit-intense and complex nose, the 1995 Blanc des Millenaires is still young and incredibly fresh on the palate. This is refreshingly pure, concentrated, fruity and perfectly round Champagne that reveals a great tension and mineral complexity. It also has a long and salty finish. Keep it for ten or 20 years. Smells younger and fresher than the Lanson Noble Cuvée 2000 with a toasty reductive charry note. Intense and cedary on the palate, dry tasting, with the dosage to round it out, deep and long with a honeyed finish. Very crisp overall. Still a way to go.
