The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Combottes presents a relatively dark side of Chambolle in its deep layers of fruit, minerals and spices. This shows terrific length and energy through to the focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. ||There is no better place to learn about the subtleties of Chambolle than in the cellars of Ghislaine Barthod. With one Bourgogne and nine Chambolles, including eight 1er Crus, Barthod’s wines run the gamut from the delicate to the virile, all within the confines of this tiny village. Every wine I tasted during my recent visit was impeccable. I can’t recommend the wines of this small, family-run domaine highly enough. Barthod was the first grower to pick in Chambolle. She started on September 8 with the goal of trying to maintain as much freshness as possible. The wines came in with around 13% natural alcohol. The fruit was 100% destemmed. I also tasted a handful of 2008s, a vintage defined by striking aromatics and plenty of energy. The fruit was harvested much later than in 2009, beginning on September 26 and finishing on October 4. Dating back to 1920’s, Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is a collaboration between wine stalwarts Noellat and Barthod, and still in the family with additional vineyard help from family member Louis Boillot, though this separate premise is run very much as its own business. Chambolle is the appellation where the domain excels, with five 1er cru sites they hold just under 6 hectares of vines of about on average 30 years age. Partial destemming, natural yeast and about 20 months ageing reflect the respect for traditional methods. The last decade as Ghislane (junior) has taken over winemaking has seen a rise in already strong quality and greater recognition for this domain.
