2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze Lucien Le Moine

From a great Burgundy vintage, an incredibly well-regarded operation and with big scores from the critics, the 2005 Lucien Le Moine, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is a very strong buy for any connoisseur or collector of the region.

A relatively new negotiant outfit, Lucien Le Moine has built its lofty reputation by sourcing only very high quality raw materials from choice vineyards in Burgundy. Just how impressive these sources are is clearly expressed in the notes from Schildknecht, who calls it “spectacularly persistant” and Tanzer who sees the “combination of sheer sweetness, density and firm spine as exhilarating.

It is also almost unbelievably rare. Just 50 dozen of this Grand Cru were made in 2005 and almost all has long gone from the market. Once these four cases are gone, finding more may well be impossible - a shame, given just how spectacularly good it clearly is. An absolute coup for any cellar.

A monumental red, powerful and packed with both fruit and tannins. It's beginning to close down, but there's a vibrant energy and drive to its blackberry, cassis and mineral flavors. Picks up leather, tobacco and spice notes on the long finish. Best from 2017 through 2042. 50 cases made. (May 2008) www.winespectator.com

Deep, bright red-ruby. Pungent aromas of blueberry, minerals, spices and exotic flowers, all showing a medicinal restraint. Superripe and wild, with almost exotic floral high tones to the creamy-sweet flavors of black fruits and minerals. The combination of sheer sweetness, density and firm spine is exhilarating. Offers extraordinary fullness of texture without any sign of heaviness. Finishes with lush tannins, outstanding length and captivating floral perfume. www.vinous.com

The Le Moine 2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze erupts from the glass with scents of black cherries, black tea, rose petals, brown spices and roasted meats. Yet more polished and refined than even its most remarkable predecessors, this fans flavor to all four corners of the palate while suggesting a lift and elegance and offering an invigorating, tart, primary fruit juiciness that defy its sheer density. Spectacularly persistent and possessed of positively bloody meatiness and ineffable but unmistakable nuances for which “mineral” represents merely a conceptual groping, this combines the intensity of the Le Moine Mazis with the elegance and seduction of the Charmes.
