2011 Chambertin Domaine Trapet

One of the three highest scoring wines from this Grand Cru in 2011, this supremely elegant effort is a great addition to any collector’s cellar. There is enormous quality on show here the score from Meadows is only beaten by the 96 point Rousseau and the 97 point Leroy. This highlights both the excellence of the wine and the incredible comparative value it offers.

At the time of release the 2011 vintage may have been unfairly underrated, but with the benefit of hindsight this view is starting to change. In two recent reports, Allen Meadows has highlighted just how good the wines can be: “The best 2011s have everything that one might want... they are utterly delicious.” Indeed, he goes as far as to place it above the hugely popular 2009 vintage in terms of overall quality: “From an overall quality perspective, I would go so far as to say that out of the triumvirate of 2009, 2010 and 2011 that 2009 is in third place, 2011 in second and 2010 is in first.” With 2012 being an excellent but tiny (and therefore expensive) vintage, many buyers are looking back to years like 2011 as there are gems to be had.

A discreet touch of wood sets off equally cool, ultra-pure and restrained aromas of dark berries, earth, wet stone and a gorgeous panoply of floral elements. There is superb intensity to the powerful and tautly muscular large-scaled flavors that exude a very fine minerality on the overtly austere, serious and strikingly long finish that delivers a whole other dimension of complexity. As Chambertin goes, this is not an especially big or brawny wine and while the word finesse is not really apt in this case, it is more refined than usual.
