2011 Chacra 55 Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir Bodega Chacra

2011 Chacra Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir is a wine for New and Old World fans. When a vastly experienced Burgundy critic like Stephen Tanzer - who is not prone to hyperbole - describes a Patagonian Pinot Noir as reminding him of “a top Dujac wine", you know it something special.

Tanzer was clearly impressed, awarding it 94 points and praising the “dense, ripe and spicy” style and “outstanding focus“.

Wine Advocate’s Luiz Gutierrez has said that Chacra produces: “the best Pinot Noirs from Argentina” and also praised this wine’s: “good balance, focused flavours and good persistence.”

The 2011 Cincuenta y Cinco is quite balanced aromatically and expressive with nice ripeness and notes of bright cherries. The palate is light to medium-bodied (these wines all range between 12.5% and 13.5% alcohol) and is polished with very fine-grained tannins, very good balance, focused flavors and good persistence. This is ready now, but should also develop more complexity with time in bottle. 15,844 bottles were filled in January-February 2012. Aug 2015, www.erobertparker.com, Drink: 2015-2021

Moderately saturated medium red. Highly perfumed aromas and flavors of strawberry, peppery herbs, cinnamon, patchouli, orange zest and underbrush; reminded me of a top Dujac wine. Dense, ripe and spicy but virtually weightless, with outstanding focus and inner-mouth aromatic lift. There's a lovely core of sweetness here but the wine stands out today for its savory firmness. Finishes very subtle and long, with refined tannins. This retained its perfumed strawberry and spice character after 72 hours in the recorked bottle. Offers a strong argument for the pinot potential of Patagonia. Mar 2013, www.vinous.com
