An expressive nose of fresh, cool and reserved aromas that are elegant, airy and intensely citrus-inflected merge seamlessly into rich, intense and pure medium-bodied flavors that possess really lovely balance and superb length on the saline and markedly dry finish. This is a wine of harmony and impeccably good balance. Tasted: Oct 15, 2013. Drink: 2017+

The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre comes from 4 hectares of vines of limestone soils and sees 14 to 16 months in stainless steel. It has a simple but clean, primal grapefruit, lime and cooking apple bouquet. The palate is balanced but very straightforward with a grassy finish that discretely nods toward a nuanced Sauvignon Blanc! Reticent at the moment, it will need a couple of years to open. Drink 2016-2024. ||For background information on Louis Michel’s 2012s, I would refer you to issue 208 of The Wine Advocate. Here, I update those barrel scores now that the wines have been bottled. Some of them felt remarkably closed, sulky even, and I advise keeping the premier crus under wraps for another year or two before opening. Wine Advocate.August, 2014
