The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy is divine. It comes from 1.80 hectares of vines planted on marl soils, matured 70% in stainless steel, the rest in used barrels for 12 months with another 6 months aging on the fine lees. The nose is cut from the same cloth as Pommier's fellow '12s: crispness so sharp that you cut your thumb on it, an almost Puligny-like minerality, and subtle white peach and pink grapefruit notes hanging around in the background. The palate is tense and vibrant, with beautifully judged acidity and a crescendo of citrus/mineral-laden fruit that finishes with style and panache. Wonderful. Drink now-2020. ||I received the wines from Isabelle and Denis Pommier after my visit to the region. I am so glad that they sent the samples because these were an absolute delight. Based in the village of Poinchy, they initially inherited just 2 hectares of vines back in 1990, which has gradually expanded to 16 hectares. They recently converted to organic viticulture. The harvest is conducted by hand and is mostly fermented and aged in stainless steel vats. There is some barrel aging, the wood sourced from four coopers. I just admired the authenticity of these Chablis wines - rarely extravagant or profound - yet consistently balanced, mineral-driven and precise. These all come highly recommended.
