The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova saturates the palate with masses of super-ripe dark fruit, tar, licorice and new leather. The Tenuta Nuova is an especially full-bodied, seamless Sangiovese deeply influenced by the Mediterranean climate of this warm site in the south of Montalcino. Layers of fruit build to an effortless, resonant finish laced with considerable aromatic nuance. This is another terrific showing from Giacomo Neri and his talented team. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. ||Giacomo Neri describes 2007 as a year with a warm spring followed by a cold, dry summer. Neri is one of the few growers who considers 2007 cooler than 2006, showing just how diverse Montalcino is. Temperatures were unusually warm during the spring, but then moderated over a coolish summer that saw very little rain. Acidities are a bit higher in 2007 than 2006. All that said, my tastings of the 2007s reveal them to be silkier and more polished young than the firmer 2006s. Needless to say, it will be fascinating to follow the evolution of both vintages over the coming years. Casanova di Neri is a family-run Italian wine producer, located in Montalcino, Tuscany. They are best known for producing Brunello di Montalcino, including the critically acclaimed wines Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto. The family also produce a concentrated and complex Cabernet Sauvignon, called Pietradonice. The estate was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri who later passed the winery to his son Giacomo in 1991. The production began with the Cerretalto vineyard, a unique piece of land with a natural amphitheatre and old Sangiovese vines that still produce wine for the top cuvees. After considerable research, the family continued to acquire land and now own 60 hectares of vineyards as well as 16 hectares of olive groves. Stylistically, Giacomo Neri describes the wines as being traditional in an innovative and modern way. The wines have received great accolades from the press, notably for the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova which received a 100 point score from Robert Parker and 99 points from James Suckling.
