2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli Il Poggione

Scored at a massive 98+ points by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, 97 points by Suckling and 95 points by Galloni, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino, Vigna Riserva Paganelli from the brilliant Il Poggione is an incredibly strong buy from this benchmark Tuscan year.

Made in only the very best years from an exceptional single vineyard, the Riserva Paganelli is always a simply stunning wine. In 2010 it is clearly very special and for Larner, “among my favorite Brunellos of the year”. In a vintage as immense from Brunello di Montalcino as 2010, this is huge praise making it instantly unmissable.

Thanks to their consistent brilliance, Il Poggione is one of our “go-to” producers in Brunello. Larner echoes our thoughts and given that she sees them as reaching “new heights in excellence” in 2010, this flagship Riserva is a wine to stockpile while available and enjoy over the coming years.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is magnificent. Huge swaths of tannin coat the palate as the 2010 shows off its power, breadth and overall intensity. Plum, black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, smoke, licorice and cloves are some of the many notes that hit the palate. The Riserva is dark, powerful and brooding. It will require at least a handful of years before it becomes approachable. These old vines, planted in 1964, confer weight, power and gravitas, all qualitites that come through loud and clear on the huge, explosive finish. Feb 2016, Vinous.com, Drink: 2022-2040

The aromas to this Brunello riserva are stunning with subtle forest fruits, orange peel and mushrooms. Full body, very fine tannins and a long and persistent finish. The flavors are so complex with earth and dark fruits. Very fine and dusty tannins. Drink or hold. Oct 2015, JamesSuckling.com

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is a phenomenal achievement and a wine that captures not only the spirit of this classic vintage, but the true essence of an age-worthy wine like Brunello. This single vineyard Riserva is sharp, pristine and immaculate. It starts slow and shy, but then blossoms to beautiful intensity and aromatic brilliance. It delivers a very authentic and genuine read of Sangiovese with wild berry aromas followed by pressed violets, wet earth, tobacco and lightly toasted spice. The bouquet is seamless and very long in persistence. The same holds true for the mouthfeel. The wine delivers a fine and silky texture with a good dose of power and personality at the rear. Tenuta Il Poggione is an Italian wine producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany. The winery is considered one of the major producers of Brunello di Montalcino with a total of 600 hectares of land in which 125 are devoted to vineyards. The estate’s philosophy is that diversified agriculture is essential to the well-being of their vineyards and for this reason the estate devotes the balance of their land to olive groves, woodlands and their family farm. Their Sangiovese vines, planted in 1964, are the potentially the oldest in Montalcino. The family-owned winery was purchased in 1890 and is now run by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, who combine tradition with progressive equipment and techniques to make a vibrant style of Brunello. In the vineyards, the vines are worked by hand and careful berry by berry selection is carried out during harvest. In the winery, only native yeast is used where wines are fermented in stainless steel and aged in only French oak (mostly untoasted) before being bottled unfiltered. The resulting wines are structured and powerful yet maintain the elegance associated with traditional Brunello di Montalcino.
