Mint, freshly cut flowers, cinnamon and sage meld into a resonant core of fruit in Ciacci's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso. Here the flavors are ample, rich and built on pure volume. Readers who like bigger Brunellos will love the Pianrosso. Proprietor Paolo Bianchini has done a terrific job with Brunello that expresses the personality of Sangiovese in this site on the southern edge of Montalcino. Bianchini had the 2010 three and half years in cask.

Beautiful and delicate from the start, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso impresses for its depth and balance. The wine sees one more year of oak cask aging compared to the base Brunello and you can definitely sense the extra spice on the nose. Those delicate balsam notes of root beer, ginger and rosemary oil are still prominently on display. Rich spice, leather and tar are followed by dark fruit, prune, blackberry and cassis. The finish is graceful and silky, but its length remains impressive. This is a terrific effort that promises a steady evolution ahead.

Aromas of lilac, dark berry and sandalwood follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and an intense and savory finish. Very intense and very long. Succulent. Amazing balance and depth to this red. It's so beautiful to taste now but it will be much better in five to ten years. A triumph.

Among its most precious assets is the Pianrosso vineyard with southwest exposures and medium, reddish soils peppered with galestro stones. Vines are planted at 240 to 360 meters above sea level and have benefited from diurnal temperature shifts that spark such energy, vitality and buoyancy in the bouquet of its wines. The 2010 Brunello Vigna di Pianrosso is the best yet. eRobertParker.com.February, 2015

Ciacci Piccolomini D’Aragona is an Italian wine producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany best known for producing outstanding Brunello di Montalcino. The estate is made up of 35 hectares of land in the Castelnuovo dell’Abaate zone which includes the prestigious Pianrosso vineyard (from which the top Sangiovese grapes are selected for Brunello). In addition, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet are also grown from which Ciacci Piccolomini make modern wines like Ateo, a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot, and Fabius, made from 100% Syrah. Much like their Brunello di Montalcino, both of these wines are highly regarded and have received rave reviews from Robert Parker, who once called Fabius “the finest Italian Syrah I have ever tasted.”

The origin of Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona goes back to the 17thcentury, where it was originally a palace erected by Montaclino’s bishop. The winery eventually became property of the Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, who had no heirs. In 1985, she passed away and left her entire estate and winery to her long standing estate manager, Giuseppe Bianchini.

The winery is now run by brother and sister team, Paolo and Lucia Bianchini who inherited the property from their father following his death in 2004. The siblings have brought the winery to new heights by modernizing the winery equipment and following the principles of organic agriculture (though not currently certified) and minimal intervention.

The wines of Ciacci Piccolomini are precise, structured and long-lasting, making their Brunello di Montalcino one of the most sought after wines in Italy.
