2011 Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione

The stunning, 95 point, 2011 Brunello di Montalcino from Il Poggione is one of the highlights of this year's releases. As one of Monica Larner’s “favourite Brunellos from the 2011 vintage”.

Il Poggione is one of the oldest estates of Montalcino, and produces wines that that have consistently wowed critics and clients alike. Without the production of Riserva in 2011, all of the highest quality grapes made it into the straight Brunello, making the potential quality of the 2011 even better and making it stand-out as a very strong buy.

Galloni echoes Larner’s praises, calling this release “one of the richest, most powerful wines of the year” and reiterates the thrust of his argument that “Poggione Brunello remains one of the best values in fine, cellar-worthy wine.” (May 2011).

A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers notable depth and intensity. Il Poggione's 2011 is one of the richest, most powerful wines of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves and new leather are some of the first nuances that open up. With time in the glass, the 2011 becomes more lifted, as brighter red cherry and raspberry-infused flavors gradually release. This is a rare 2011 that demands at least a good few years in the cellar. In 2011, Il Poggione did not bottle a Riserva. All the juice went into the straight Brunello. Feb 2016, www.vinous.com, Drink 2020-2040

A red with plum, meat, cedar and sandalwood character on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Racy finish. Refined at the end for a 2011. Oct 2015, JamesSuckling.com

Il Poggione has done a terrific job with its 2011 Brunello di Montalcino. The wine is soft, yielding and charged with a velvety and smooth texture. It is deeply redolent of dark berry, black cherry, spice, leather and tobacco. The wine's sunny personality never feels flat or too dense. In fact, the wine offers a very tight and steely backbone that gives the wine stature and strength. This is one of my favorite Brunellos from the 2011 vintage. Lovely pure cherry fruit, raspberry and back notes of citrus. Fresh and vibrant with supple tannins. Long finish. March 2016

Tenuta Il Poggione is an Italian wine producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany. The winery is considered one of the major producers of Brunello di Montalcino with a total of 600 hectares of land in which 125 are devoted to vineyards. The estate’s philosophy is that diversified agriculture is essential to the well-being of their vineyards and for this reason the estate devotes the balance of their land to olive groves, woodlands and their family farm. Their Sangiovese vines, planted in 1964, are the potentially the oldest in Montalcino. The family-owned winery was purchased in 1890 and is now run by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, who combine tradition with progressive equipment and techniques to make a vibrant style of Brunello. In the vineyards, the vines are worked by hand and careful berry by berry selection is carried out during harvest. In the winery, only native yeast is used where wines are fermented in stainless steel and aged in only French oak (mostly untoasted) before being bottled unfiltered. The resulting wines are structured and powerful yet maintain the elegance associated with traditional Brunello di Montalcino.
