I am absolutely enthusiastic about Sassetti Livio Pertimali's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Breathe deep into the glass and this wine awards you a beautiful sensorial experience that brings you immediately to varietal tones of pressed cherry, dried blackberry, spice and tobacco. The most compelling notes however are those polished mineral tones of crushed granite and pencil shaving that add sharpness and focus. This is not a timid Brunello and you can taste the sheer power and the quality of the fruit on hand. The mouthfeel is polished and smooth with fine and exact textural richness. Bravo!



Andrea Cortonesi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino struts its stuff from the very start. This is a Brunello of profound beauty, intensity and complexity. At this young stage in the wine's life you get a generous dose of primary fruit focused on cherry and blackberry. You also get so-called secondary aromas from the oak that recall spice, cinnamon and dark smoke. These lead to the promise of beautiful tertiary aromas as the wine continues its slow evolution over the course of time. This wine is like a long-distance runner who explodes from the starting line and keeps a steady pace throughout the race. Dark penetration and rich aromas wrap generously over the palate. Endnotes of spice, cured meat and barbecue smoke add extra layers to the finish. I am a huge fan of Uccelliera's Brunello and the 2010 is absolutely unforgettable. ||Andrea Cortonesi impresses once again with a set of breathtaking wines. His 2010 Brunello is excellent and shows a new level of winemaking maturity and sophistication for this hardworking producer with vines near the honey-colored Abbazia Sant'Antimo at the heart of the appellation. Founded in 1986 by Andrea Cortonesi, Ucceliera’s wines are stylistically more forward, deeper and richer than many. Andrea himself has been working the land in Montalcino since he was a boy and is passionate about his vines, his winery and the end product and is a man with a clear mission to make what he believes to be the best.

The estate is found in Castel Nuovo del Abate to the south of Montalcino and covers roughly six hectares. Vineyard management is impeccable, and as natural as possible; in the winery the wines see both large oak casks and barriques and Andrea sees the potential of both. The wines are lovely, with a distinct richesse – Antonio Galloni describes the estate as“without question one of the handful of top producers in Montalcino”
