2010 Brunello di Montalcino Valdicava

One of the most eagerly awaited and yet most difficult to source wines of this outstanding vintage has been the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino from Valdicava. A 99 point blockbuster from a profound vintage, this is a hugely exciting opportunity to own a world-class wine.

With its near perfect score from James Suckling and an incredible tasting note to match, this looks like being perhaps the greatest ever straight Brunello made at this world-class estate. Finding any has not been easy and we’ve only seen small quantities since release.

If you don’t already have this in the collection, it’s a must and if you do, a second or third case is well worth considering. A great, great wine at unbelievably good value, this is not to be missed.

Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plum, flower, licorice and mushroom. Full body with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured but shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal. Better in 2016. The gamy 2010 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job of presenting intensity and elegance all in the same delicious package. That's not easy to do and the excellent 2010 fruit plays a big role in achieving this goal. The wine offers a long succession of aromas that span from ripe fruit, to smoked meat, to grilled herb and soft spice. Delicate tones of licorice, cola and anise seed add life and energy. The list goes on. The wine's mouthfeel is best characterized by softness and structure, a two-fold approach that gives high hopes for the long aging potential of this wine. Valdicava's Brunello will appeal to those who love earthy and leathery notes in their Brunello. ||Vincenzo Abbruzzese's Valdicava presents a fantastic tag team of wines representing the 2009 and 2010 vintages respectively. Both wines are delicious although I will note the earthy-gamy note in the base Brunello that prevented me from scoring it higher. My hesitation is that it might become more pronounced with aging. eRobertParker.com.February, 2015

Valdicava is widely regarded as one of the greatest vine growers in Italy, producing some of the most unique, opulent Brunellos in Tuscany. The estate covers 333 acres, with 57 devoted to Sangiovese vines.Owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese and oenologist Attiliio Pagli are passionate about making wines which are expressions of the terroir. The focus is all about the immaculately kept vineyards: Valdicava’s Brunello is made from some of the lowest yields in Tuscany, which gives the wines their wonderfully deep colour and concentration.
