Castello Banfi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the ripest wines I have tasted from this vintage. The bouquet opens to chewy tones of cherry or raspberry preserves with dried prunes and figs at the back. This is no surprise considering the softly sloping, sea-facing vineyards located in the lower part of the appellation where temperatures are slightly warmer on average. There is no doubt that this is an impeccably crafted wine (it sees 50-50 aging in French barrique and larger oak casks) that aspires to a great level of intensity, power and fullness. The mouthfeel is round and immediate with sweet fruit flavors. This Brunello will appeal to those who like a softer side of Sangiovese. eRobertParker.com.February, 2015
Castello Banfi is an Italian wine producer with vineyard holdings in Montalcino, Chianti, Bolgheri and Piemonte. Three labels exist under the Banfi umbrella: Castello Banfi, Banfi Toscana and Banfi Piemonte. Founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, the company is now led by two grandchildren of the founding brothers. James Mariani and Cristina Mariana-May, share the title of co-CEO of what has become one of largest family-owned producers of Italian wine. Dedication to excellence has grown the Banfi estate into a household name for quality Italian wine. The estate is renowned for its clonal research that has allowed both indigenous and international varieties to thrive in their optimal terroir. Consistent and good-value examples of Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Super-Tuscans and Barolo, can all be found under the Banfi label.
