Paolo Bianchini’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a plump and immediate wine with dark fruit tendencies, a bold appearance and sweet fragrances of blackberry and chewing tobacco. The body is medium in feel but should gain some volume as the wine continues its bottle evolution. The Tuscan sunshine cuts straight through this wine with soft tannins and a fruity, approachable style. Two and a half years of barrel aging follows fermentation in stainless steel. Drink: 2015-2020. Ciacci Piccolomini D’Aragona is an Italian wine producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany best known for producing outstanding Brunello di Montalcino. The estate is made up of 35 hectares of land in the Castelnuovo dell’Abaate zone which includes the prestigious Pianrosso vineyard (from which the top Sangiovese grapes are selected for Brunello). In addition, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet are also grown from which Ciacci Piccolomini make modern wines like Ateo, a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot, and Fabius, made from 100% Syrah. Much like their Brunello di Montalcino, both of these wines are highly regarded and have received rave reviews from Robert Parker, who once called Fabius “the finest Italian Syrah I have ever tasted.”
The origin of Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona goes back to the 17thcentury, where it was originally a palace erected by Montaclino’s bishop. The winery eventually became property of the Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, who had no heirs. In 1985, she passed away and left her entire estate and winery to her long standing estate manager, Giuseppe Bianchini.
The winery is now run by brother and sister team, Paolo and Lucia Bianchini who inherited the property from their father following his death in 2004. The siblings have brought the winery to new heights by modernizing the winery equipment and following the principles of organic agriculture (though not currently certified) and minimal intervention.
The wines of Ciacci Piccolomini are precise, structured and long-lasting, making their Brunello di Montalcino one of the most sought after wines in Italy.
