Banfi’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino wraps around the palate with black fruit, tobacco, smoke, licorice and new leather. An attractive, mid-weight wine, the 2008 should drink nicely for at least a handful of years. The 2008 shows lovely density and richness for the year, with hints of smoke, licorice and tobacco that add complexity on the close. This is a fabulous effort considering a production level of around 500,000 bottles, a staggering sum by virtually any standard. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. ||I tasted a number of new wines from Castello Banfi this year. The estate seems to be differentiating their wines a little more than in the past into an entry-level line and a more prestigious Poggio alle Mura range, which has now been enhanced with the addition of a new Rosso and non-Riserva Poggio alle Mura Brunello. I have to say the new Poggio alle Mura wines are distinctive and highly appealing. eRobertParker.com.June, 2013
Castello Banfi is an Italian wine producer with vineyard holdings in Montalcino, Chianti, Bolgheri and Piemonte. Three labels exist under the Banfi umbrella: Castello Banfi, Banfi Toscana and Banfi Piemonte. Founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, the company is now led by two grandchildren of the founding brothers. James Mariani and Cristina Mariana-May, share the title of co-CEO of what has become one of largest family-owned producers of Italian wine. Dedication to excellence has grown the Banfi estate into a household name for quality Italian wine. The estate is renowned for its clonal research that has allowed both indigenous and international varieties to thrive in their optimal terroir.
