This wine is exceptionally powerful, muscular, and concentrated, with a certain sternness, but impressive potential. It is not ready for consumption. The 1994 Brunello di Montalcino reveals sweet, spicy oak, leather, cherry fruit, and cigar smoke notes. Medium to full-bodied and dense, with impressive concentration, outstanding purity and length, as well as a tannic, austere finish, this wine requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15+. Poggio Antico is an Italian wine producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany. The estate is known for making excellent quality Brunello di Montalcino under three labels: Brunello, Altero and Riserva. In addition, the estate produces two Super Tuscan wines: Madre and Lemartine, both blends of Sangiovese and Bordeaux grape varieties. The estate is comprised of 200 hectares (only 32.5 under vine) located at an average altitude of 450 meters above sea level, making Poggio Antico’s vines the highest altitude in Montalcino. This privileged position, sunny south facing vineyards and calcareous/rocky soil are attributed to the consistently concentrated and special character of the wines. In the winery, only the best grapes make it through the rigorous sorting process where 5 sorting tables are manned by 9 vineyard staff. Gentle extraction methods are used before the wine is bottled and aged in a combination of Slavonian and French oak, depending on the Brunello. The family owned and operated winery is run by Paola Gloder Montefiori, a passionate Sangiovese producer who has been dedicated to the winery since 1987. Her husband, Alberto, joined her in 1998 and currently runs the winery facility and vineyard. Together, they make an average of 100,000 bottles per year, including their highly regarded Brunello di Montalcino labels.
