In discussing Roche de Bellene, the Wine Advocate's Neal Martin has stated that "you can draw parallels with Remoissenet" in terms of both quality and price-to-points value across a broad range of appellations and crus - a significant statement given that he has frequently praised Remoissenet for providing some of the most stupendous wine for the money in Burgundy.

The 2011 is an excellent showcase for the quintessential opulence of Bonnes Mares, with complex fruit and spice energised by a strong mineral core. In terms of price, cases are currently trading for notably less than many similarly-scored Bonnes Mares of the vintage. Comparatively speaking, it is an absolute steal.

A background trace of oak sets off the spicy dark berry liqueur, earth, game and floral aromas. There is very good if not genuinely special concentration to the broad-shouldered, velvety and powerful middle weight flavors that display fine volume on the balanced, dusty and moderately austere finish that delivers fine complexity and seriously good persistence. This moderately structured effort will require the better part of a decade of cellar time to fully resolve the supporting tannins. In a word, lovely. Tasted: Apr 15, 2014. Drink: 2021+

Bright, dark red. Precise, vibrant aromas of red and black raspberry, cola, rose petal and botanical herbs, complicated by a light balsamic quality. A strong mineral core energizes the flavors of black raspberry, spices and herbs. Most impressive today on the very long, palate-staining finish, which features strong but very suave tannins and outstanding lift. January 2013.

Some minerality on the nose, which is giving little away today, though does come round with some air. In the mouth this is powerful: chunky and classy though still quite tight. This will want some time. FINE+RARE

The highly respected Burgundian winemaker, Nicolas Potel, decided to launch his own negociant business in 1996 following the death of his father and subsequent sale of Domaine Pousse d’Or, which his father had been managing and where Potel had been learning make wine. In 2005, he created his own estate, Domaine de Bellene in the Cote de Beaune with 15 ha of organic vines. This was followed by the launch of his new negociant business, Maison Roche de Bellene, in 2008 when he departed from SAS Nicolas Potel Company.Potel’s philosophy is to focus on offering the finest wines in the Cote d’Or, concentrating mainly on the Cote de Nuits with the widest selection of Grand Crus in Burgundy. He has recently launched Collection Bellenum - a range of rare older vintages. Potel’s years as a fruit buyer for his negociant line makes him one of the best connected men in Burgundy. He is extremely passionate about old wines and through his contacts has gained access to the private reserves of some of the best growers in the region.Collection Bellenum is a parcel of these very special wines. Potel tasted over 1000 wines for the range, but selected only the finest 100 with vintages dating from 1959 to 2006.
