2002 Bollinger R.D.

We are delighted to offer a superb champagne from one of the most recognisable and desirable brands in the world: the 2002 Bollinger R.D. from Bollinger.

James Suckling recently scored the R.D. it at 99 points - the second time he has done so - and has previously called it a “thrilling Champagne”. Antonio Galloni is also a fan, calling the 2002 R.D. “striking in its beauty” with “exceptional balance and harmony” and commenting that it “should also age impeccably”.

The RD, or Récemment Dégorgé (recently disgorged), is the same wine as the excellent Bollinger Vintage Grand Année but matured for eight years on the lees, providing a delicious complexity, richness and depth. It is stunning, with Antonio Galloni calling it “one of Champagne’s legendary wines.”

Given the costs involved in the production and the length of time the R.D. has spent maturing, it offers outstanding value for money and is sure to be a highlight of any collection. We are very pleased to offer:

It's striking that is as fresh as it is given the ten years in the cellars. It has a fine citrus nose with plenty of lemons, grapefruit and yellow chalky notes, not to mention some lighter floral elements. The palate is super dry (dosage at 3-4g), and there's a silky, sherbet-like texture that makes this smooth, fine and long. The citrus flavors give way to surging acidity and the finish twists very slowly through to lightly toasted cashew nuts mingled with complex fruit and citrus flavors. Disgorged 22nd October, 2013. Super fresh, this is striking given the 10 years in the cellars; it has a fine citrus nose - plenty of lemon, grapefruit, yellow chalky notes, some lighter floral elements too. The palate is super dry (dosage at 3-4g) and there's a silky, sherbet-like texture, smooth, fine and long. The citrus flavours give way to the driving surging acidity, thunderous acidity, really driving and powerful. The finish twists very slowly through to light-toasted cashew fruit flavours, but lemon citrus prevails. This is thrilling Champagne. Oct 2012, www.jamessuckling.com, Drink: 2016+

No tasting note.

At this stage in the lunch, my notes were getting rather sparse, but this did have an aroma of mushroom on the nose initially, only to become much fresher and tighter on the palate, especially with the Comté cheese. Jun 2016, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2015-2025
