Expressive violets, flowers, mint, tobacco and dried cherries emerge from 2009 Barolo Sarmassa. Darker and more powerful than the Cannubi, the Sarmassa fills its broad-shouldered frame beautifully. Sweet herbs, anise and rosemary are some of the nuances that develop on the intriguing, beguiling finish. The 2009 should be cellared for at least a few years to allow the tannins to soften. The 2009 Barolo Sarmassa delivers a polished and focused quality that hits the nose in a sharp and determined manner. The wine totally awakens your senses and the natural firmness of the tannins gives the mouthfeel a dry or tight aspect. Good bright medium red. Strawberry and a flinty note on the nose. Rich, ripe and fairly open-knit for young Barolo, but with good power nonetheless. Azienda Agricola Brezza, is an Italian wine producer based very close to the center of Barolo within the Piemonte region. The family owned and operated estate extends across twenty two hectares, over sixteen of which are planted with vineyards and twelve of the sixteen are in Barolo. Included in the vineyard holdings are plantings in renowned cru sites Cannubi and Sarmassa. The history of the Brezza Estate dates back to 1885 when vineyards were first planted on the estate. In 1910, Giacomo Brezza bottled the first wine with his father Antonio and together they built the winery that is widely acknowledged today as an institution. In 1989, current winemaker Enzo Brezza took over the wine production and converted the vineyards to organic viticulture (they became officially certified in 2012). Traditional methods are still used today and the style of Barolo remains mindful of purity, elegance and finesse. In additional to Barolo, Brezza also make wine from Barbera and Dolcetto. Their top wines from Barolo cru vineyards Cannubi and Sarmassa are highly sought after and frequent recipients of 93+ scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Antonio Galloni.
