Elio Grasso made breathtakingly good wines in 2010, with the Barolo Chiniera and Casa Mate, scored at 98 and 97 points respectively by Antonio Galloni, two of the wines of this excellent vintage. This has made the very late-release, tiny production Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2010 very hotly anticipated.
Thanks to such critical acclaim, allied to low overall production, Grasso is now one of the most collectable wineries of the region, with a loyal following snapping up allocations almost immediately. With this in mond the Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2010 is not to be missed.
As mentioned above, Grasso’s 2010s are of exceptional quality, while the last release of the Runcot Riserva, the 2008, was scored at 95+ by Galloni and a massive 99 points by James Suckling. Just 500 dozen bottles or so are made of the Runcot, held-back at the property and only now released, nearly six full years since the harvest.
For any collector of Barolo, it’s a must-have for the cellar and worth serious consideration while still available to buy.

Elio Grasso is a Barolo producer based in the Monteforte d’Alba village in Piemonte. The estate has a productive vineyard holding of 18 hectares where they grow Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnnay. Their top wines include: Barolo Riserva Runcot, Barolo Gavarini Chiniera and Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate, all of which are widely acknowledged as some of the best available today. The family owned estate regard their vineyards as their greatest assets and maintain the traditions of their predecessors in their farming and cellar techniques. The estate is currently run by Gianluca Grasso, son of Elio, who remains faithful to the estate’s 30 year -long commitment to vinify all of their grapes separately, according to their vineyard provenance. Fermentations and maturations are carried out unhurriedly, giving due care and attention to each parcel before the wines are aged extensively in their cellar. The resulting wines are pure, terroir-driven expressions of their variety, often with a distinct aromas and flavours. The Baroli are complex and structured with serious ageing potential. Wine critics agree, as all three are consistent recipients of 94+ scores from the Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker and James Suckling.
