Average critic rating : 93.5 points

A wine with lots of berry and chocolate character plus hints of walnuts. Full body, soft and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Juicy finish. As good as the 2010. Better to drink in 2018. James Suckling. April, 2015.

The 2011 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera shows a terrific level of balance and harmony despite the warmer-than-average growing conditions in 2011. The bouquet here is generous and rich with shapely tones of spice, dark fruit, grilled herbs and dried flowers. It also excels in terms of its textural richness that is powerful and elegant at the same time. The wine should continue its bottle evolution over the next ten years. ||Now celebrating his 19th harvest, Gianluca Grasso describes some of the challenges of the hot 2011 vintage. In order to avoid overripe fruit, he opted for a shorter vegetative cycle and an early harvest. His maceration times were slightly shorter this vintage to avoid any harshness of tannins that may come from the seeds. In all, these careful decisions have helped to preserve that impeccable house style that distinguishes the wines of Elio Grasso. Collectors should order a bottle or two of the excellent 2008 Barolo Riserva Rüncot. This is one of the top Italian wines on the market today. eRobertParker.com.June, 2015

Elio Grasso is a Barolo producer based in the Monteforte d’Alba village in Piemonte. The estate has a productive vineyard holding of 18 hectares where they grow Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnnay. Their top wines include: Barolo Riserva Runcot, Barolo Gavarini Chiniera and Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate, all of which are widely acknowledged as some of the best available today. The family owned estate regard their vineyards as their greatest assets and maintain the traditions of their predecessors in their farming and cellar techniques. The estate is currently run by Gianluca Grasso, son of Elio, who remains faithful to the estate’s 30 year -long commitment to vinify all of their grapes separately, according to their vineyard provenance. Fermentations and maturations are carried out unhurriedly, giving due care and attention to each parcel before the wines are aged extensively in their cellar. The resulting wines are pure, terroir-driven expressions of their variety, often with a distinct aromas and flavours. The Baroli are complex and structured with serious ageing potential. Wine critics agree, as all three are consistent recipients of 94+ scores from the Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker and James Suckling.
