The 2005 Barolo Ciabot Manzoni provides a gorgeous counterpoint to the Bricco Luciani. Dark cherries, tar, spices, chocolate and French oak are some of the nuances that emerge from this rich, full-bodied wine. Grasso’s Ciabot Manzoni possesses superb density and concentration, even if the oak is quite overt. Grasso gave the Ciabot Manzoni 100% new oak, an approach that producers in La Morra and elsewhere in Piedmont have largely moved away from. The Grasso family have been making wine since 1927, but have only been bottling all their production since the mid-1980s when Federico (the current proprietor) took over from his father Silvio. This is a particularly interesting estate in that they make both modern and traditional styles. The Manzoni and Luciani get the barrique treatment whilst the Turne (formerly l’Andre) has a traditional elevage.
