The 2007 Barolo Carobric is a powerful wine loaded with dark red fruit, tar, incense and licorice. It is an explosive, flashy Barolo that captures the essence of the year. I find a wonderful balance of precision and richness in the glass, not to mention more than enough fruit to counter the incisive tannins. Though open at the outset, the Carobric shuts down quickly in the glass, suggesting it is headed for a period of dormancy. A second bottle was far more open and expressive and feminine, highlighting how hard it is to understand young Barolo! The Carobric is made from vineyards in Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. ||This is a stunning set of new wines from Enrico Scavino. Over the last few years Scavino has begun to incorporate lots vinified in specially designed tanks that allow for greater contact with the skins. This year Scavino has a new Barolo from a recently acquired parcel in Monvigliero, the most historic vineyard in the village of Verduno. Scavino had incorporated the fruit from this parcel into the straight Barolo when he had access to the vineyard under lease, but now that he has full control of the vineyard he has decided to bottle the wine separately. The first vintage, the 2007, is a stunner. Wine Advocate.February, 2011

Paolo Scavino is an Italian wine producer based the Castiglione Falletto district of the Barolo region. The winery is comprised of 23 hectares which includes 19 of the historical Barolo crus located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The family owned winery distinguishes itself with meticulous care for their vineyards and passion for terroir driven wines that are stylistically mindful of elegance. Only three indigenous grape varieties are used in the entire productions: Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. The winery is currently run by Enrico Scavino, along with daughters Enrica and Elisa. Enrico started to work in the winery in 1951 when he was only 10 years old. Now with 60 years of experience behind him, he is one of the most respected winemakers in Piemonte and Paola Scavino wines are regarded as great quality throughout their range.
