Produttori del Barbaresco is a winery collaboration between several Nebbiolo growers who control 100 hectares of land in the Barbaresco zone of Piemonte. The winery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, blended from Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, as well as a Nebbiolo Langhe that is meant for earlier consumption. In great vintages, 9 single vineyard Barbaresco wines are produced from sites within the village boundaries. The winery produces Nebbiolo grapes exclusively and production averages at 45,000 cases per year. The history of Produttori del Barbaresco is fascinating. Before 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo or wines were labelled Nebbiolo di Barbaresco. In 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba, created the first cooperative called the Cantine Sociali, comprised of 9 Barbaresco vineyard owners. He was insistent on 2 things: the wines they made should be 100% Nebbiolo (at the time Barbera was a common component) and should labelled Barbaresco. Over time Cantine Sociali dramatically increased the reputation of Barbaresco and improved the lives of the farmers who would not have been able to survive without the collective. Unfortunately, following the death of Domiio Cavazza and the economic hardship under Mussolini’s government, the Cantine Sociali closed its doors in the 1930’s. Fast forward to 1958, when favour fell back to the Nebbiolo growers of Barbaresco when a local priest named Don Fiorino created Produttori del Barbaresco. Don Fiorino recognised the need for local growers to band together as families began to leave the village to look for work elsewhere. His initiative to refocus the community on quality Barbaresco is nothing short of revolutionary. This time, the group was made up of 19 growers who banded together, to once again overemphasize the quality and potential of the Nebbiolo grape variety. The first three vintages were made in a local church basement in Barbaresco while the collective raised funds for a proper winery. In 1961, the first official home of Produttori del Barbaresco was opened across from the church. Today, the original group of 19 has grown to 51, who collectively make some of the best Barbaresco in Piemonte. The winery has maintained its original mandate to favour quality over quantity and traditional methods to create pure and long-lived expressions of the Nebbiolo grape variety.
