2015 Badette

The Chateau Badette 2015 is the kind of wine we love to offer at FINE+RARE. Made from 45 year old vines and available in tiny quantities, it is a hard-hitting St Emilion worthy of a place in any cellar.

In May 2015 Neal Martin included the Badette among his top wines "that could represent some of the best value in 2015." The first wine on his list was Château Badette, with Martin saying: "Not a Saint Emilion that I am overly familiar with, but their 2015 was absolutely superb... this wine shows the potential quality."

Château Badette is a tiny eight hectare estate, located a stone's throw from Pavie Macquin and Troplong Mondot. Despite being released at less than half the price of either of these neighbours, with 92-94 points Badette outscored Pavie Macquin and equaled Troplong Mondot in Wine Advocate. This also caught the attention of James Suckling, who awarded it 92-93 points and Antonio Galloni who said of this "solid showing" that "the 2015 Badette hits the palate with notable intensity and pure power."

Completely modernised in 2016, Château Badette produces only 2,500 cases from its 45 year old vines. Don't miss out on a chance to own this excellent wine.

The 2015 Badette hits the palate with notable intensity and pure power. There is plenty of intensity in the glass but the tannins remain burly and rough around the edges. Smoke, game, tobacco, mocha and licorice meld into the unctuous finish. The tannins could be a little more finesse. Otherwise, this is a solid showing. Tasted two times. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

The 2015 Badette is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that was picked between 10 October and 11 October (i.e. one day.) Matured in 100% new oak, it has a complex bouquet, powerful and you might describe it as modern in style, but there is personality here with black truffle-tinged black fruit with a touch of crème de cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a keen line of acidity, intense but not powerful with a clean and precise, energized finish. The 2014 left me a little nonplussed, but the 2015? Now we are talking. Apr 2016, www.eRobertParker.com, Drink: 2020-2040

A pretty and silky young red with blueberry and blackberry character. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a fresh finish. Mar 2016, www.jamessuckling,com

Truffle, cocoa, black cherry and earthy notes create the perfume. Made from 95% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc , there is a bit too much oak, which might better integrate as the wine evolves. Still, this wine has fleshy, ripe, character-driven fruit and no sensation of heat, even though the wine reached 15% alcohol. Apr 2016, www.thewinecellarinsider.com
