A super effort from proprietor Hubert de Bouard, this blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc exhibits sweet notes of chocolate, charcoal, blackberries, and jammy cherries in its round, opulent, fleshy personality. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine achieved 13.5% natural alcohol. Low acidity and ripe tannin make for a voluptuous style of Angelus to drink now and over the next 10-15 years. Wine Advocate.April, 2010

Shows very good intensity of blackberry and coffee bean on the nose. Full-bodied, with slightly austere tannins and a long finish. A little hollow midpalate. Almost minerally. There's a lot of wood and cool fruit character¿a bit too much new wood for me. Wait and see. Best after 2012. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2010

Dark purplish crimson. Very big-boned but with a hint of green on the nose. This wine tastes like a cross between Troplong Mondot and its fleshiness and the norm of the rest – lots of late-picked aromas but also some astringency and pretty mouth-puckering overall. Like sucking a bit of tarmacadam. Pretty hard work! And a bit of a hole in the middle. Not the charm of Pavie.www.jancisrobinson.com, 21 Apr 2008

Classed as a St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A with Châteaux Pavie , Ausone and Cheval Blanc, Château Angélus is one of the leading estates in St Emilion and one of the finest wines of Bordeaux. Controlled by Hubert de Bouard since the 1985 vintage, it is a reliably excellent source of top St Emilion, regularly praised by the critics, notably Robert Parker.

The vineyards, planted to 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, are situated on “côtes”: this is the best soils of St Emilion with clay and limestone subsoils. Neighbours include F+R favourite Château Canon and Jonathan Maltus’ Le Dôme.

The quality at Château Angélus has only been at the very highest level since Hubert de Bouard took control in 1985. Climate-controlled cellars were constructed, high levels of vineyard management implemented, and modern – which is to say clean, precise and controlled – winemaking methods introduced. The rewards of this were first seen with the brilliant 1989 and 1990 vintages, though the estate reached new heights in the 21st century: 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003 and 2000 Château Angélus are all wines that are close to perfect.
