No estate has produced a more impressive array of wines since 1986 than l'Angelus. In what can be a light-bodied, sometimes dilute year, l'Angelus has turned out one of the vintage's stars. Exhibiting a dark ruby/purple color, a big, smoky, licorice, and herb-scented nose, and gobs of ripe, chocolatey, cassis fruit, the 1992 finishes with sweet tannin and no evidence of dilution. Charm, fatness, depth, purity, and suppleness are present in this impressive wine. Anticipated maturity: now-2004. Bravo! Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 96.

Extraordinarily good. one of the stars of this weakling vintage. Black cherry and berry flavors, full-bodied, velvety and fresh. Long, long finish. Drink now. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1996

Still quite deep with evolution only at the rim. Very fully evolved nose, almost a note of decay. Sweet, simple start and then pretty coarse, rustic tannins. You wouldn’t want to buy this now and if it’s in your cellar, drink it immediately!www.jancisrobinson.com, 16 May 2005

Classed as a St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A with Châteaux Pavie , Ausone and Cheval Blanc, Château Angélus is one of the leading estates in St Emilion and one of the finest wines of Bordeaux. Controlled by Hubert de Bouard since the 1985 vintage, it is a reliably excellent source of top St Emilion, regularly praised by the critics, notably Robert Parker.

The vineyards, planted to 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, are situated on “côtes”: this is the best soils of St Emilion with clay and limestone subsoils. Neighbours include F+R favourite Château Canon and Jonathan Maltus’ Le Dôme.

The quality at Château Angélus has only been at the very highest level since Hubert de Bouard took control in 1985. Climate-controlled cellars were constructed, high levels of vineyard management implemented, and modern – which is to say clean, precise and controlled – winemaking methods introduced. The rewards of this were first seen with the brilliant 1989 and 1990 vintages, though the estate reached new heights in the 21st century: 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003 and 2000 Château Angélus are all wines that are close to perfect.
