Mouton Rothschild

Chateau Mouton Rothschild has long enjoyed a reputation as one of Bordeaux's premier wine producers and is among the most coveted First Growths of the region. Its distinctive motif of commissioning famous contemporary artists to design the label of each vintage became a permanent fixture in 1946, and to date luminaries such as Salvador Dali, Henry Moore, Andy Warhol and Wassily Kandisky have contributed to this effort. As well as giving each vintage a unique signature, this practice means older examples of Chateau Mouton Rothschild are often comparatively more valuable than other First Growths of Bordeaux.

Some of Chateau Mouton Rothschild's most celebrated vintages include 1945, 1982 and 1986, garnering perfect scores from high-profile critics such as Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator.

Situated in the village of Pauillac outside the city of Bordeaux, the vineyard covers 75 hectares of gravel-based soils. The vines are 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand-harvested, then the juice is fermented in barrel. After fermentation the wine is aged in new oak for 22 months before bottling. Total production is 25-30,000 cases, split between Mouton itself and the second wine, Le Petit Mouton
